Type of Volcano


St. Helens is a stratovolcao, or a composite volcano. A composite volcano is made up of alternating layers of ash and lava. Mt. St. Helens is found on continental crust in North America, making it a continental volcano. This picture of St. Helens was taken by Jim Nieland of the U.S. Forest Service, it was taken before the devastating 1980 eruption.
